The Dazu Rock CarvingsTravel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

The Dazu Rock Carvings are a group of cave temples representing China, carved during the Tang and Song dynasties from the 9th to 13th centuries. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are acclaimed as one of China's four great caves, alongside the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, the Yungang Grottoes, and the Longmen Grottoes. While the other caves are solely themed around Buddhism, the Dazu Rock Carvings are characterized by a harmonious blend of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, conveying the social and religious spiritual world of China at the time. Many of the carvings are realistic and rooted in everyday life, making them accessible and highly valued, despite being religious art.

1. Main Highlights

🗿 Highlights of the two major core areas

The sights are scattered across the area, but the main attractions are Mount Baoding and Mount Beishan.
• Mount Hocho:
This is the most spectacular area, where the essence of Dazu stone carvings is gathered. Planned by the Song Dynasty monk Zhao Zhifeng, it is a major religious art space that took over 70 years to complete.
o Kegon Sansei Statues: The highlight is the three gigantic Buddha statues, each over 7 meters tall.
o Six Realms of Reincarnation: A unique philosophical sculpture that visualizes the Buddhist ideas of karma and reincarnation.
o Cowherding: This series of sculptures depicts the process of a herdsman taming a cow, allegorically depicting the path to enlightenment in which humans gradually control their minds (cows) through training. This is a particularly friendly and popular area.
• Kitayama:
This is the area with the longest history among the Dazu Rock Carvings, where you can enjoy the beauty of the carvings. Carving continued for about 250 years from the end of the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty.
o Water Moon Guanyin Statue: This masterpiece is praised as the "most beautiful Guanyin" among Chinese Guanyin statues. Its graceful and realistic appearance is considered the pinnacle of Song Dynasty sculpture.
o Wheel-Chain Caves: This cave is architecturally extremely rare and valuable, with an intricate octagonal "sutra repository" carved into the rock.

2. Historical Stories

📜 History and Thoughts Surrounding the Dazu Rock Carvings

• The Spirit of Unity of the Three Religions: The most distinctive feature of the Dazu Rock Carvings is that they enshrine the Buddha of Buddhism, Laozi of Taoism, and Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, in the same place. This is a valuable testament to the fact that these three schools of thought were integrated and deeply rooted in people's lives during the Tang and Song dynasties.
• A culmination of stone carving art: Experience the evolution of Chinese stone carving art, from the majestic and idealistic expressions of the Tang Dynasty to the realistic and humanistic expressions of the Song Dynasty. In particular, the continuous narrative carvings at Baodingshan were intended to convey teachings to the masses in an easy-to-understand way, and give a sense of the popularization of religious art.
