Huanglong Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information
Huanglong is a scenic spot with karst topography that represents China and is registered as a World Heritage Site. Its name comes from the countless golden travertine ponds that line the valley, resembling a giant golden dragon running up the mountainside. This "heavenly fairyland," stretching from 3,100m to 3,600m above sea level, is known for its countless "colorful ponds" that sparkle in emerald green and turquoise blue, its golden "golden sand pavement," and its majestic landscape of forests and snow-capped mountains. It continues to captivate travelers from all over the world as one of Sichuan's most spectacular views, rivaling Jiuzhaigou Valley.
1. Main Highlights
🏔️ The "Golden Valley" with its breathtaking views
The sights are mostly along a single walking trail, which you can enjoy as you slowly climb up.
• Five-Colored Pond (the highest point of the Huanglong Scenic Area):
Located at the top of the landscape, this area is home to hundreds of colorful ponds, large and small. The crystal clear water is reflected off the travertine bottom, and the way it changes color from blue to green to yellow with every passing moment, depending on the sunlight, is truly a magical sight. This is a spectacular spot that is said to be the most beautiful in Huanglong.
• Huanglong Ancient Temple:
Located near the Five-Colored Pond, this Taoist temple was built during the Ming Dynasty. The scenery, harmonizing with the snow-capped mountains in the background, gives the feeling that this is a sacred place. It was once a place of worship where Buddhism and Taoism were fused.
• Golden Sand Beach:
It is one of the world's largest travertine deposits, stretching approximately 1,300 meters in length and 40 to 120 meters in width. The golden travertine covering the water's surface sparkles in the sunlight, making it look like a "golden river." It's a spectacular sight that truly brings to mind the origin of the Yellow Dragon's name.
• Competition of Colorful Ponds:
Located downstream from Jinshapu, this area is home to over 500 colorful ponds, each with its own unique shape and color, creating a truly "colorful competition."
2. Historical Stories
📜 The Legend and Science of the Yellow Dragon
• The Legend of Huanglong Zhenren: According to Taoist legend, the immortal Huanglong Zhenren trained here before ascending to heaven. It is said that the incarnation of the dragon he left behind became this golden valley.
• The secret behind the Karst landscape: This spectacular scenery was formed when abundant groundwater from the snow-capped mountains flows through limestone areas, containing a lot of limestone (calcium carbonate), and springs up to the surface. The limestone in the water precipitates and accumulates, creating travertine ponds and terraced fields over tens of thousands of years.

• Clothing and equipment: Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The weather is changeable and it gets chilly in the mornings and evenings, so be sure to bring layers of clothing and rain gear. The sun is strong, so it's a good idea to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
• Route selection:
o Using the ropeway: The best route to conserve energy is to take the ropeway at the entrance, go up to the top of the mountain, and then descend to see the main view.
o Walking: Only for those who are confident in their physical fitness. The climb is very strenuous.
