Jing'an Temple Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

Jing'an Temple, located in the Jing'an District, the central area of Shanghai, is one of Shanghai's oldest Buddhist temples. Its origins date back to the Three Kingdoms period (247 AD), boasting a history of nearly 1,800 years. What makes it unique is that, while surrounded by modern skyscrapers and commercial facilities, the temple grounds retain a solemn Buddhist atmosphere, making it something of an "urban oasis." In particular, the golden roof shining in the sunlight and the intricate architectural details captivate visitors, as if they are being transported to another world suddenly appearing in the midst of the modern cityscape.

1. Main Highlights

🏯 Temple architecture and space

Jing'an Temple is mainly composed of three buildings, and although it is compact, it has a spectacular space.
• Mountain gate and pagoda:
The entrance gate is huge and has a majestic appearance with a golden carving of "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" on the roof. The upper part of the gate is actually a pagoda, which forms the symbolic appearance of the temple.
• Daeonghoden:
The main hall is the center of the temple and houses a majestic golden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. The ceiling is intricately decorated and the surrounding walls are beautifully painted. It is said that the entire interior space represents the Pure Land.
• Brahma Palace (Kannon Hall):
This is a hall dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva. Inside is a statue of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Kannon, whose graceful and compassionate appearance is impressive. Many worshippers visit here, especially those praying for safe childbirth and good marriage.

2.History and culture

📜 History and legends surrounding Jing'an Temple

• The origin of the name "Jing'an" and its relocation: Jing'an Temple was originally built on the banks of the Wusong River (Suzhou River), which flows north of its current location, and was called "Hushu Chongxuan Temple." In the Southern Song Dynasty (1216), the temple was relocated to its current location due to the risk of collapse caused by the river's current. It was renamed "Jing'an Temple," taking a character from the era name "Jiading" at the time. The name embodies the wish for peace, "to be quiet and at peace."
• "The Sixth Spring Under Heaven" and the Eight Scenic Views of Jing'an: In the past, a famous spring known as "Yuquan" gushed forth within the grounds of Jing'an Temple, and it was praised as the "Sixth Spring Under Heaven." The temple was known for its picturesque scenery, known as the "Eight Scenic Views of Jing'an," and attracted many literati and artists. Unfortunately, the spring has now dried up, and only a monument remains, but it remains an important anecdote about the temple's long history.
