 Fenghuang Ancient TownTravel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

Located in the mountains of western Hunan Province, Fenghuang Ancient Town is a historic water town where the culture of the Miao and Tujia peoples remains strong. Its beauty has earned it the nickname "China's most beautiful small town," and it's widely known as the setting for the novel "Border City" by literary scholar Shen Congwen. The town's name is said to come from the legendary phoenix, a bird that once appeared in this area. The Tuojiang River runs through the town, and on both banks stand rows of floating houses called diajiaolou, built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, creating a landscape reminiscent of a beautiful ink painting.

1. Main Highlights

🏮 Highlights of a stroll around the castle

The town is compact and the main attractions can be explored on foot.
• Taojiang and Hanging Towers:
The river is the lifeblood of the city. Crossing the narrow road that runs along the river, "Tuojiang Jumping Rock," feels like walking on water. The diagonal towers that jut out from the riverbank are a symbolic sight of Fenghuang Ancient Town.
• Hongqiao wind and rain tower:
This two-storey bridge with pavilions was built during the Ming dynasty and spans the Tuojiang River. The first floor is lined with souvenir shops, and the teahouse on the second floor offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Diajiao Building and the entire town. The view at sunset is particularly breathtaking.
• Back alleys of the old castle:
Just a short walk away from the main street, you'll find narrow stone-paved streets like Dongzheng Street and Wenxing Street. Dotted with former merchants' houses and traditional handicraft workshops, you can feel the breath of old-fashioned life.
• Shen Yuwen's former residence:
The birthplace of Shen Congwen, one of China's most famous literary figures, was born in Fenghuang Ancient Town. This modest Qing dynasty house provides insight into the worldview of his masterpiece, "The Border City."
