The Bund Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

The Bund is one of Shanghai's most scenic spots, stretching approximately 1.5km along the Huangpu River and also known as the "International Architecture Expo." On the Puxi side are stately historic buildings built in the 1920s and 1930s, while on the Pudong side are towering skyscrapers symbolizing the 21st century (such as the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower). The dramatic contrast between history and the future, separated by a single river, creates a unique, world-class urban landscape. Its completely different appearance during the day and at night makes it well worth visiting at different times of the day.

1. Main Highlights

🌆 How to enjoy each area

The Bund can be enjoyed in three different areas: the historical buildings, the promenade, and Pudong on the opposite bank.
• Bund Historical Buildings (International Architecture Expo Group):
The area is home to 52 historic buildings, including the former British Consulate, the Peace Hotel, and the Shanghai Customs Building. The architectural styles range from Neoclassical to Gothic to Art Deco, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of a different country with every step. These buildings were once used as banks, trading companies, and clubs, and are a testament to the glamorous era when Shanghai was known as the "Paris of the East."
• The Bund Promenade (Fanban Wall):
This promenade stretches for approximately 1.5 km along the Huangpu River. The view of the Pudong skyscrapers on the opposite bank from here is the biggest highlight of any visit to the Bund. The illuminations after sunset are particularly spectacular, and the light show, reminiscent of a futuristic city, evokes the modern energy of Shanghai.
• Pudong Vista on the opposite bank:
The promenade offers panoramic views of the Pudong skyline, dominated by three skyscrapers: the Shanghai Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Oriental Pearl Tower, landmarks that symbolize the dynamic development of modern Shanghai.

2. History

📜 History and evolution of the band

• The Concession Period and the "Wall Street of the East": When Shanghai opened its port to foreign trade under the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, the Bund area became a foreign concession, primarily for Britain. Countries rushed to construct magnificent buildings to house the headquarters of banks and trading companies, and the Bund reached the height of its prosperity as one of Asia's leading financial centers, known as the "Wall Street of the East."
• The birth of "Shanghai at Night": In the 1930s, a modern culture influenced by jazz and Art Deco flourished around the Bund, and cafes and nightclubs began to line the streets. This marked the beginning of the image of "Shanghai at Night" and laid the foundation for the cosmopolitan and glamorous atmosphere of Shanghai today.

3. Useful Information Before Your Visit

Suggested Time for Sightseeing:The best time to see the spectacular view is from early evening to night. You can enjoy both the "magic hour" from before sunset until it gets dark, and the night view.

4.  Visiting Etiquette and Important Notes

• Crowd Information: The promenade can get very crowded on weekend and public holiday nights. If you don't like crowds, we recommend visiting on weekday evenings or during the day.
• Take a cruise: The popular "Pujiang Cruise" is a cruise on the Huangpu River. From the boat, you can get a panoramic view of both the Bund and Pudong, making for some unique photo opportunities.
• Check the weather: If you want to enjoy the night view, we recommend checking the weather forecast in advance. Fog and rain can significantly impair the view.
