2. History and Changes

📜 The history and evolution of Nanjing Road

• The Concession Era and the "Four Great Companies": Nanjing Road began to develop as the center of the British Concession in the late 19th century. At the time, four major department stores, Xianshi Company, Yong'an Company, Xinxin Company, and Daxin Company, competed with each other, and the area established itself as one of Asia's leading shopping districts. Many historical buildings still retain traces of this era.
• The origin of the name "Nanjing Road": Built in 1851 as "Park Avenue" during the concession period, it was renamed "Nanjing Road" in 1862 after Nanjing, the capital of China at the time, and remains so to this day. The name itself tells the story of Shanghai's modern history.
