Tianzifang Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information
Tianzifang is a small creative arts area in Shanghai's Luwan district, which was created by renovating a group of traditional houses called shikumen. Unlike huge shopping malls, the maze-like alleys are packed with unique boutiques, art galleries, cafes, bars, and restaurants. It is a particularly unique and fascinating spot in Shanghai, which could be called a "living museum" where the daily lives of local residents coexist with creative spaces aimed at tourists.
1. Main Highlights
🎨 How to enjoy each area
Each alley in Tianzifang has a slightly different atmosphere, making it a fun place to explore.
• Main Alley Boutiques and General Stores:
On both sides of the narrow alleys, there are many unique shops selling designer fashion, handmade accessories, vintage goods, Shanghai retro goods, etc. You can have fun treasure hunting to find one-of-a-kind original items that are not mass-produced.
• Art galleries and workshops:
There are many small galleries and artist studios scattered around the city, where you can not only appreciate contemporary art works but also get up close and personal with artists at work, experiencing a vibrant art scene.
• Cafes and bars:
Stylish cafes and bars are tucked away on the corners of the alleys and on the balconies of the second and third floors. If you're tired of walking, you can take a break and relax while watching the people passing by. This is another experience you can only have in Tian Zi Fang.
• Scenes of local residents' lives:
Although the area has become a tourist destination, many local residents still live and work here. Laundry hanging out to dry in the alleys and elderly people chatting away are the essence of Tianzifang, where old and new Shanghai intersect. It is important to respect their daily lives and quietly watch over them.
2. History
📜 The history and changes surrounding Tianzifang
• From Shikumen Residences to a Creative Hub: The buildings of Tianzifang were originally Shikumen residences—brick-built row houses dating back to the 1920s that blend Western and traditional Chinese architectural styles. In the late 1990s, artists such as the painter Chen Yifei began setting up studios in this area due to its low rents. This movement gradually transformed Tianzifang into a vibrant artists’ quarter and creative community.
• Origin of the Name “Tianzifang: The name Tianzifang comes from Tian Zifang, one of the earliest painters mentioned in the ancient Chinese historical text Records of the Grand Historian. Inspired by his name, Tianzifang was so called in the hope that the area would become a center for artistic creation and cultural expression.
