Pan Yunduan and his filial piety: Yu Garden is a private garden that was built over a period of nearly 20 years, beginning in 1559, by Pan Yunduan, a high-ranking official of the Ming dynasty, to entertain his father, Pan En, and to pray for his longevity. The character "Yu" (豫) contains the meaning of "putting aged parents at ease," and the name of the garden expresses the wish for a "comfortable garden."
