Shanghai Yuyuan Garden Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information
Yuyuan Garden is a classical Ming dynasty garden with over 400 years of history, located in the heart of Shanghai. Designated a "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit" by the State Council in 1982, it is known for its graceful scenery and exquisite landscaping techniques. The garden was designed under the concept of an "urban forest" (a mountain forest in the city), beautifully recreating the charm of mountains and rivers in a limited space. The adjacent Yuyuan Shopping Mall (Shanghai Old Street) is an area that recreates the traditional Chinese streetscape, and its greatest attraction is that you can experience two different faces at once: the tranquility of the garden and the bustle of the market.
1. Main Highlights
🏞️ Yuyuan Garden — The pinnacle of classical gardens
The park is divided into six areas with dozens of attractions connected by corridors.
• Dajia Mountain: The highest peak in Yuyuan Garden, this stone mound is one of the most representative examples of Ming Dynasty gardens. Built from approximately 2,000 tons of yellow stone, its complex caves, pathways, and the views from the top make it a veritable urban oasis.
• Gyokukado and Gyokureiro:
Yu Linglong: This masterpiece of Taihu stone is considered one of the three great stones of the Jiangnan region. It is said to meet all the requirements of a famous stone - wrinkles, transparency, thinness, and perforations - and is said to be beautiful from any angle.
o Jade Flower Hall: This is a study built by the owner of the garden, Pan Yunduan, to appreciate the jade paintings.
• Tokugetsuro and Mankaro:
o Tokugetsurou: As the name suggests, this is the "Moon Tower." It faces the pond and is the perfect place to admire the moon reflected on the water's surface.
o Manka-ro: Formerly a venue for lavish banquets, the building now features elaborately carved windows from which you can enjoy the garden's seasonal flowers.
• The Inner Garden and the Peaceful Viewing Hall: Another garden within the Yu Garden, the Peaceful Viewing Hall is known as the "garden within the garden." The Peaceful Viewing Hall is its central building, and its interior beams are decorated with exquisite woodcarvings depicting scenes from stories such as the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms."
🏮 Yuyuan Shopping Mall — A vibrant traditional market
The area outside the garden is known as the kitchen of Shanghai and is lined with traditional architecture.
• Luo Hao Lang: A historic restaurant that has been visited by dignitaries of heads of state and above, it is particularly famous for its Shanghai-style dim sum.
• Shanghai Lao Fantian: A long-established restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Shanghai cuisine.
• Five-Spice Bean Shop and Pear Candy Shop: These long-established shops sell traditional Shanghai snacks, making them the perfect place to look for souvenirs.
2. History
📜 History and people associated with Yuyuan Garden
Pan Yunduan and his filial piety: Yu Garden is a private garden that was built over a period of nearly 20 years, beginning in 1559, by Pan Yunduan, a high-ranking official of the Ming dynasty, to entertain his father, Pan En, and to pray for his longevity. The character "Yu" (豫) contains the meaning of "putting aged parents at ease," and the name of the garden expresses the wish for a "comfortable garden."

• Crowd Information: Both the park and the shopping mall are extremely crowded on weekends, public holidays, and during the Chinese New Year. We recommend visiting on weekday mornings when it is less crowded.
• Walking in the garden: The garden has many ponds, hills, and corridors, and there are also some stairs and unstable areas. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
• Dining timing: Popular restaurants such as Luborang and Shanghai Lao Fantian often have long queues at lunch and dinner time, so it's best to make a reservation in advance or visit at a different time.
