2. Historical Stories
🛡️ History and legends surrounding the Great Wall
• The purpose of construction and signal towers: The Great Wall was built by successive dynasties to prevent invasions by horse-riding tribes from the north. When an enemy attacked, they would use signal towers to send out smoke (smoke signals) by burning wolf droppings. This was because the smoke rose high and straight up, allowing for quick communication over long distances.
• The Legend of Meng Jiangnu: During the Qin Dynasty, Meng Jiangnu, the wife of a husband who was mobilized to build the Great Wall, visited him, worried about the cold, bringing him winter clothes. However, when she arrived, she discovered that her husband had already died from the hard work and was buried within the wall. Meng Jiangnu cried for seven days and seven nights, until her grief caused a section of the Great Wall to collapse, revealing her husband's remains. This tragic love story is widely known as a folktale that conveys to future generations the harshness of building the Great Wall .
