The Temple of HeavenTravel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information
The Temple of Heaven is China's largest altar complex, where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties prayed to Heaven and offered thanks for bountiful harvests. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, and its unique architectural style and profound cultural significance make it an essential spot for tourists visiting Beijing. With a total area of approximately 2.73 million square meters, roughly four times the size of the Forbidden City, the main architectural complex is divided into the Inner Altar and the Outer Altar. Here, you can experience ancient Chinese worship of Heaven and its intricate architectural philosophy.
1. Main Highlights
🌐 Architectural complex embodying the ritual of worshiping the heavens
The sights are lined up in a straight line from north to south, embodying the ancient Chinese concept of the universe as "Heaven, Circle, and Land."
• Round Square Altar: This open-air platform was used for ceremonies to worship the heavens. The three-tiered circular platform is surrounded by a white jade balustrade, and all of the steps and platform stones are numbered "9" or multiples of "9." This is because "9" is the ultimate positive number and the most sacred number, symbolizing the Son of Heaven (emperor). When a voice is spoken at the "Heart of Heaven Stone" in the center of the platform, the echo causes the voice to reverberate loudly.
• Huangqiongyu: This temple enshrines the deity of Heaven. Its distinctive round roof, covered with blue glazed tiles, is also known as the "Blue Pavilion" due to its beautiful appearance. This is where the famous "Echo Wall" begins. If you speak softly towards the inside of the wall, your voice will travel along the wall and be heard clearly even from a great distance. This is a brilliant example of architectural acoustics.
• Prayer Hall: This building symbolizes the Temple of Heaven and was built to pray for bountiful harvests. Its three-tiered blue glazed tile roof and golden crown are striking. This architecture embodies ancient Chinese cosmology and natural thought. The three-tiered roof represents heaven, earth, and all things, the 28 pillars represent the 28 constellations, and the four central pillars represent the four seasons. Each number carries a deep meaning.
2. Historical Stories
🙏 History and Thoughts Related to the Temple of Heaven
• The idea of "Heaven" and the Emperor: In ancient China, the emperor was believed to be the "son of heaven," or the son of heaven, who ruled the earth. Therefore, the security and prosperity of the country depended on the emperor's good relationship with "Heaven." The solemn ceremony of offering sacrifices to heaven at the Temple of Heaven was one of the emperor's most important political duties.
• The mysteries of numbers embedded in the architecture: The entire Temple of Heaven was designed based on the idea of "Heaven is Round and Earth is Square." Therefore, the main buildings are circular and the exterior walls are square. As mentioned above, the mysteries of numbers, including the number "9," are scattered throughout the building, making the architecture itself a kind of model of the universe.
