Tiananmen Square Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

Tiananmen Square is a vast public square in the heart of Beijing, known worldwide as the national symbol of the People's Republic of China. One of the largest urban squares in the world, it covers an area of 440,000 square meters and can accommodate up to one million people. Tiananmen Square is the historic site of the National Founding Ceremony, which proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, and is an important stage in China's modern history. Visiting here means experiencing the political center of China firsthand and experiencing the weight of its history.

1. Main Highlights

🏛️ Historical buildings around the square

Tiananmen Square, together with the important buildings that surround it, forms a complete landscape.
• Tiananmen Tower : This was the main gate of the imperial city during the Ming and Qing dynasties, towering over the north side of the square. A portrait of Chairman Mao hangs on the top of the tower, flanked by large slogans reading "Long live the People's Republic of China" and "Long live the great unity of the peoples of the world." This is the place where the emperor once issued his documents, and is now used as a parade platform for important national ceremonies. It is an architectural landmark that can be said to be the face of China.
• Monument to the People's Heroes: Standing in the center of the square, this is the tallest monument in China. It was erected to commemorate the unknown heroes who lost their lives in the People's War of Liberation and other battles, and the inscription was written by Chairman Mao himself.
• Chairman Mao Memorial Hall: Located on the south side of the square, this building houses the remains of Chairman Mao Zedong. Many visitors come to pay their respects to this leader who left such a profound mark on modern Chinese history. The interior has a solemn atmosphere, and photography is strictly prohibited.
• Great Hall of the People: Located on the west side of the square, this building is China's equivalent of the National Diet. It is where the country's most important meetings, such as the National People's Congress, are held. Its grand scale and imposing appearance are well worth a visit.

2. Historical Stories

• Witness to history: Tiananmen Square was an important stage for China's modernization and nationalist movements, including the May Fourth Movement in 1919.
