Wangfujing(Shopping Street)Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information
Wangfujing, located in the heart of Beijing, is the city's most famous and historically significant shopping district. Approximately 1.5 kilometers long, this street has a history dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, spanning over 700 years, and was named after the many royal palaces (royal residences) and wells (hence the "well" character). Today, it's a bustling spot for shopping and dining, where tradition and modernity are beautifully blended, with everything from long-established department stores to the latest brand shops and gourmet food streets lined with food stalls.

🛍️ How to enjoy each area
Wangfujing is made up of several distinct areas, offering a variety of ways to enjoy it.
• Wangfujing Main Street:
Large shopping malls such as Beijing APM, Beijing Department Store Tower, and Wangfujing Department Store are lined up, offering a wide range of domestic and international brands. You can satisfy all your shopping desires, from fashion to general merchandise to electronics.
o Long-established stores and brand flagship stores: From traditional long-established stores such as Sheng Xifu (a long-established hat store) and Tongrentang (a long-established Chinese medicine store) to the latest brand flagship stores such as the Apple Store, the mix of old and new stores is a sight unique to Wangfujing.
• Wangfujing Food Street (Street Food Street):
This street food stall area allows you to casually experience Beijing's famous cuisine. You can sample all the city's famous snacks, from bizarre dishes like grilled scorpion and tarantula skewers to lamb skewers, rice crackers (jianbing), and Beijing-style yogurt, all in one place. This energetic area is always bustling with tourists.
• Silk Road Street and Dongtang:
East Hall: This historic Catholic church on Wangfujing Street is a striking stone structure that suddenly appears in the midst of a modern, bustling downtown area. It is a photogenic spot that represents Beijing, where different cultures coexist.
o Surrounding Alleys: If you venture a little off the main street, you'll find areas lined with stylish cafes and boutiques, such as the brick-built "Silk Road Street," where you can enjoy a stroll.
2. Historical Stories
📜 History and origins of Wangfujing
• Origin of "Wangfu" and "Well": During the Ming Dynasty, ten Wangfu (mansions of the imperial family) were built in this area, and it was called "Ten Wangfu" or "Wangfu Street." There was a well on the street that gushed forth sweet, delicious water, which gave the area its name, "Wangfujing." The remains of the well are still preserved near Snack Street, and a monument stands there.
• Development as a commercial town: From the end of the Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China, many merchants and craftsmen gathered and a market was established. Later, with the influx of foreign capital, the area continued to develop into Beijing's leading commercial center, and it has continued to take on the form it has today.
