Kuanzhai Alley(Wide & Narrow Alleys) Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

Kuanzhai Alley(Wide & Narrow Alleys) is an area that has preserved and restored the Qing Dynasty's ancient streetscape, dating back over 300 years. It is a popular cultural spot where you can experience the charm of life in the "good old days" in modern Chengdu. As its name suggests, it is made up of three parallel alleys: "Kuanxiang" (Wide Alley), "Narrow Alley," and "Well Alley." Lined with old brick houses (siheyuan), traditional teahouses, cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops, the area exudes a unique atmosphere that exquisitely blends tradition and modernity, tranquility and vitality. It is the perfect spot for strolling, dining, and drinking, symbolizing Chengdu's "slow life."

1. Main Highlights

🏮 Three alleys, three different looks

Each alley has its own unique character and offers different ways to enjoy it.
• Kuanxiang: The widest of the three, this alley is themed around "leisure." It has a relatively calm atmosphere and is lined with traditional teahouses, high-end restaurants, and several cultural courtyard buildings. This is an area where you can enjoy a leisurely cup of tea and experience the slow pace of life in old Chengdu.
• Narrow Alleys: These quaint narrow alleys, themed around "slow living," are packed with stylish cafes, bars, boutiques, and creative souvenir shops. The brick walls and cobblestone streets offer many photogenic spots, making them extremely popular, especially among young people.
• Well Alley: This alley, themed around "new life," incorporates the most modern elements. On one side of the alley, there is a brick "old wall" cultural and artistic wall, which features reliefs and exhibits depicting life in old Chengdu, giving it a historical feel.

2. Historical Stories

📜 The history and changes surrounding Kuanzhai Alley

• Manchu Soldier's Street: During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, this area was part of Shaocheng, the residential area for the Eight Manchu Banner Soldiers stationed in Chengdu and their families. The road structure and house style of that time form the basis of today's Kuanzhai Alley.
• "Chengdu's Living Museum": Over time, the alley faced the threat of decline and redevelopment, but in the 2000s it was revitalized by preserving the old architecture while injecting new culture and commerce. It has now been reborn as the "face of Chengdu," a must-see for tourists visiting Chengdu, and is known as a successful example of the preservation and utilization of historical buildings.
