Leshan Giant Buddha Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information
The Leshan Giant Buddha is known as the world's largest stone-carved seated Maitreya Buddha and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in 713, the first year of the Kaiyuan era under Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, and took 90 years to complete. Standing 71 meters tall, the statue is said to be "a mountain of Buddha, and a mountain of Buddha," due to its overwhelming scale, blending seamlessly with the natural rocky mountain. Standing over the rapids where the Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River converge, the statue was originally built as a prayer for easing water disasters. Today, its magnificent form continues to inspire peace and awe in visitors.
1. Main Highlights
🗿 Great Buddha and surrounding attractions
There are two main ways to enjoy the Leshan Giant Buddha: looking up at the statue and standing next to it.
• Leshan Giant Buddha itself:
A spectacular sight: Starting at the entrance to the scenic area, you can slowly walk down the nine-turned pavilion, gradually gaining a full view of the Great Buddha. Looking up from the square at the base of the statue, you will be struck by the contrast between its enormous size and its gentle face.
Panoramic view from a boat: Another recommended way is to take a sightseeing boat and enjoy the panoramic view of the Great Buddha from the river. The view of the Buddha is particularly beautiful in the afternoon when the light is shining, making it ideal for photography. You can truly experience the truth of the saying, "A Buddha is a mountain in itself."
• Nearby attractions:
Ryounji Temple: Located on the right shoulder of the Great Buddha, this ancient temple houses artifacts related to Zen Master Kaitong, who oversaw the construction of the Great Buddha, and Zhang Qiu Jianqiong, who took over the project.
o Wuyou Mountain: A small hill within the scenic area, it offers a magnificent view of the confluence of the three rivers from a different angle than the Great Buddha.
2. Historical Stories
📜 History and legends surrounding the Leshan Giant Buddha
• Zen Master Kaitsu's Achievements: The Great Buddha's construction was initiated by Zen Master Kaitsu. He was concerned about the loss of many lives due to the difficult water transport routes, and prayed that the power of the Great Buddha could calm the flow of the water. To raise funds for the construction, he went around begging for alms. When officials demanded funds, he told them, "I will not compromise my beliefs, even if it means gouging out my own eyes." This anecdote illustrates the strong will embodied in the Great Buddha.
• An ingenious drainage system: The Great Buddha took 90 years to complete, and three generations of construction managers worked on it. The statue has a cleverly designed hidden drainage system to prevent erosion caused by rainwater, which is one of the reasons why the Great Buddha has been preserved for 1,300 years .
