Sanxingdui Museum Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

Sanxingdui Museum is a unique museum unlike any other in the world, showcasing the remains of Ancient Shu, one of China's most mysterious and pinnacle civilizations of the Bronze Age. Discovered by chance by local farmers in 1929, the two sacrificial pits made their presence known to the world in 1986, completely transformed our understanding of the origins of Chinese civilization. The enormous and unique bronze, gold, and jade artifacts on display here defy conventional wisdom about Chinese archaeology, and as one of the greatest mysteries in ancient Chinese history, they inspire awe and shock in all who visit.

1. Main Highlights

🎭 An incredible collection of must-see national treasures

Almost all of the museum's exhibits are of such high quality that they are considered first-class cultural relics (national treasure class), and the following artifacts in particular are must-sees.
• Bronze Vertical Eye Mask (青铜幅面器): This extremely unusual mask features bulging eyeballs and enormous ears. It measures 1.38 meters wide and is thought to represent not a human being, but a god worshipped by the people of ancient Shu. Its bizarre design leaves a strong impression on those who see it.
• Bronze Standing Man (青铜立人像): At 2.62 meters tall and weighing 180 kilograms, this is the world's largest and most complete bronze standing statue. It is depicted in a mysterious pose, as if holding something above its head. It remains a mystery as to what it is that he is holding, and whether he is a king or a priestess.
• Bronze Divine Tree (Seido Shinju): This sacred tree, restored to a height of 3.96 meters, is said to represent the ancient view of the universe. Its nine branches feature birds carrying the sun, while a dragon entwines itself at its base, reflecting the worldview of the ancient Chinese myth of Fuso.
• Golden Staff & Golden Mask: The pure gold staff and extremely thin mask demonstrate the ancient Shu state's incredible gold processing techniques, powerful royal authority, and abundant wealth.

2.Historical Stories

📜 Mysteries and legends surrounding Sanxingdui

• The Mysterious "Ancient Shu Kingdom": The Sanxingdui civilization is a mysterious kingdom where myth and reality intertwine, with almost no historical records remaining. Its unique ritual system and artistic style are completely different from the Yellow River civilization (Central Plains civilization), proving the existence of an advanced civilization that developed independently in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River .
• Sudden end: The biggest mystery is why this advanced civilization suddenly disappeared from history. War, flood, relocation of the capital... Various theories have been proposed, but conclusive evidence has yet to be found.
