Hongya Cave Travel Guide
Highlights, History & Visitor Information

Hongya Cave is a representative landmark of Chongqing, a unique architectural complex of 11-story "hanging towers" stacked on the cliffs. Its existence is the most dramatic embodiment of Chongqing's mountain fortress character as a "vertical city." Originally an old residential area, it has now been renovated while preserving its traditional style, and its night view is particularly famous. When the lights come on all at once after sunset, a fantastical and breathtaking sight unfolds, as if you have wandered into the world of Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "Spirited Away," drawing many tourists to this spot.

1. Main Highlights

🏮 How to enjoy Hongya Cave by level

The 11-storey Hongya Cave has each floor with a different theme, making it fun to explore from top to bottom or bottom to top.
• 11F/1F (Urban Planning Magic):
The biggest surprise about Hongya Cave is that both the first floor (Jiabin Road) and the eleventh floor (the road surface on the Jiefangbei side) are connected to the road above ground. Experience this three-dimensional feeling that is unique to Chongqing, where "no matter where you enter, you're always on the ground floor."
• 9F-10F (Food and Bar Street):
This area is home to many restaurants offering "river views." While savoring Chongqing's famous hotpot and Sichuan cuisine, you can enjoy the spectacular view of the Jialing River flowing below and the modern buildings on the opposite bank.
• 5F-8F (souvenirs and accommodation):
This is an area where you can purchase Chongqing's local specialties and souvenirs. In the "Chongfeng 1980" area, the streetscape of Chongqing in the 1980s is recreated, giving you a retro feel.
• 1F-4F (Traditional Culture and Specialty Shopping Street):
The area has a back alley atmosphere and is lined with craft shops and snack bars. Looking up at the complex structure of the Suijao Tower from below, you will be overwhelmed by its scale and power.

2. Historical Stories

📜 History and legends surrounding Hongya Cave

• History of "Hongya Droplets": The name "Hongya" comes from the ancient scenic spot known as "Hongya Droplets," where water gushed down from the cliffs like a waterfall, bringing greenery to the surrounding area. This historic name is recorded in books from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
• The wisdom of "hanging buildings": This is a traditional Chongqing architectural style that developed to allow buildings to be constructed on steep slopes or limited land. This construction method, which uses pillars to support the building, is the crystallization of the wisdom of our ancestors, who cleverly adapted to the terrain without going against it.
